Teri Bureman suffered a severe spinal cord injury in 2003 and more than 8 years later continues to defy the odds. Here is her story of inspiration and experience with smartCRUTCH.
“My name is Teri Bureman. In July of 2003 I was thrown from a horse, breaking my neck at C-5/6/7. I was left an incomplete quadriplegic. I have been told that the text books say I should never be able to stand, much less walk and that I should not expect improvement in my condition after the first two years.
I took my first step in May of 2008 using braces and canes. So much for the text books...
I recently purchased the Smartcrutch to replace the more traditional canes I had been using with my braces in therapy. When I used the canes I found that it was my forearm that had to bear the load and do the work as I tried to shift, tuck and push to engage my braces.
The effort to stabilize and push was considerable and took a toll on my endurance and causing a great deal of strain on my back.
The Smartcrutch has taken the load off my forearms and put it on the crutch. As my arms rest in the cradle of the Smartcrutch, the muscles in my shoulders do more of the work needed for shift, tuck and push. I have greater stability and more endurance as a result of using my muscles more efficiently. And, most importantly, far less back strain.
I am attaching some photos of me using the Smartcrutch with my braces. The man in the photo with me is Josh Layman, DPT, my therapist, at the Meyer Outpatient Rehab Center in Springfield, MO.”
